# Degree-minus-one coloring of contacted $J(5,5)$ patches

## Problem and contribution

We prove a finite local extension theorem relevant to the 492-vertex biplanar occurrence barrier in [2]. Every $J(5,5)$ with one crosscontact is degree-minus-one choosable. The same is true for the eight two-contact and two three-contact patterns that occur in that certificate. A literal scan finds 110 one-contact, eight two-contact, and two three-contact patches, so all 120 contacted patches in the witness are covered. The 490 bare $J(5,5)$ occurrences are outside this theorem.

This is a local result for an explicitly 8-colorable, noncritical graph. It does not force a contacted patch in a critical biplanar graph and does not improve the global Earth–Moon lower bound.

## Graph and polynomial setup

The vertices of $J(5,5)$ are hubs $x,y$, endpoints $A,B$, and path interiors $p_1,\ldots,p_4,q_1,\ldots,q_4$. The hubs are adjacent, and each path is $A$ to $B$. A contact $(i,j)$ adds $p_iq_j$. For a contacted graph $H$, put

$$
f(v)=d_H(v)-1,qquad t(v)=f(v)-1.
$$

Let

$$
P_H(X)=\prod_{uv\in E(H),\,u<v}(X_u-X_v).
$$

For $k$ contacts, $|E(H)|=23+k$ and

$$
\sum_v t(v)=22+2k,qquad |E(H)|-\sum_v t(v)=1-k.
$$

Every queried monomial has total degree $|E(H)|$.

Suppose an exact $f$-list assignment is uncolorable. Divide $P_H$ by the monic list polynomials over independent color variables. The reduced remainder is zero by grid interpolation. For one color with support indicators $I_v$, specialize its variable to $z$ and all other color variables to zero. For a deficit vector $d\leq t$ and $r=|d|+1-k\geq0$, the coefficient of $z^rX^{t-d}$ gives

$$
\sum_{\substack{\alpha\geq0, |\alpha|=r\\
\operatorname{supp}(\alpha)\cap\operatorname{supp}(d)=\varnothing}}
[X^{t-d+\alpha}]P_H
\prod_{v\in\operatorname{supp}(\alpha)}I_v=0.
$$

The disjointness condition is part of this one-color reduction: an overflow position has zero deficit and reduces to exponent $t(v)$, so it cannot simultaneously lie in the deficit support. Each multi-index is counted once. The verifiers assert the target degree before evaluating exact integer coefficients.

## One-contact cases

Path reversal and swapping the two paths reduce the sixteen positions to six representatives. Selected deficit rows leave the following nonempty support counts:

| representative | supports | contradiction |
|---|---:|---|
| $(1,1)$ | 18 | $B$ is absent from every support |
| $(1,2)$ | 6 | $A$ and $B$ are absent |
| $(1,3)$ | 14 | $B$ is absent |
| $(1,4)$ | 6 | $A$ and $B$ are absent |
| $(2,2)$ | 17 | every support containing $A$ also contains $p_1$, although $f(A)>f(p_1)$ |
| $(2,3)$ | 8 | $A$ and $B$ are absent |

Each contradiction rules out an uncolorable exact list assignment. The primary vertex-elimination engine checks 4,675 coefficients; the independently written edge-endpoint engine reproduces every value.

## Two- and three-contact cases

Eight patterns have ordinary Alon–Tarsi certificates. For each, a nonzero coefficient occurs at an exponent vector within the list capacities:

| contacts | coefficient |
|---|---:|
| $(2,1),(1,3)$ | $-1$ |
| $(2,3),(4,3)$ | $-3$ |
| $(4,2),(2,4)$ | $1$ |
| $(1,2),(4,1)$ | $4$ |
| $(3,3),(2,1)$ | $-1$ |
| $(2,3),(1,2)$ | $4$ |
| $(3,2),(1,3),(4,3)$ | $3$ |
| $(3,4),(4,1),(1,3)$ | $3$ |

The remaining pattern $\{(3,1),(2,4)\}$ is handled by ten linear support equations. Starting from all 4095 nonempty supports, the successive counts are

$$
1535,479,159,111,63,18,9,6,3,1.
$$

The final support is $\{p_1,p_4,q_2,q_3\}$, which omits both hubs; hubs must have nonempty lists. Thus this pattern is also reducible. The multi-contact verifier checks 108 exact coefficient queries.

## Occurrence scan and reproducibility

The supplied rotation systems and edge lists from [2] were scanned independently. The scan identifies 110 one-contact, eight two-contact, and two three-contact $J(5,5)$ patches, and classifies every contacted occurrence by one of the theorem’s representatives. It also records 490 bare patches, but those are not claimed here.

Run the following standard-library checks from the supplement:

```text
python verify_j55_single_contacts.py
python verify_j55_multiple_contacts.py
python verify_j55_single_contacts.py --independent
python verify_j55_multiple_contacts.py --independent
python scan_j55_contacts.py
```

The two coefficient engines agree on all 4,783 queries. The supplied certificate and scan are used only for this finite contacted-witness statement.

## Limitations and related work

The even-path reductions in paper 26 [1] use a different family of cores. The present result handles the contacted odd/odd $J(5,5)$ patterns in [2]. It does not cover bare $J(5,5)$, arbitrary contact sets, longer odd paths, or any occurrence theorem for 10-critical biplanar graphs. In particular, the known bare $J(3,3)$ and $J(3,5)$ obstructions show why a contact-specific statement cannot be promoted to all local cores.
