# Residual conics on Craig's cubic: five M1 forms of degree 12, with three certified fibres

## Problem and contribution

An unconditional certificate of $\ell$-rank $s$ for an imaginary quadratic field is a list of independent binary quadratic forms of exact order $\ell$ and common fundamental discriminant $\Delta<0$. Cohen–Lenstra heuristics treat the odd part of the class group as Haar measure on finite abelian groups, with weight $1/\lvert\mathrm{Aut}(G)\rvert$ [1]. Polynomial families of forms over $\mathbb Q[t]$ are one way to force rank: Dirichlet composition in $\mathbb Q[t]$, not representation of $1$ by $(A,B,A^2)$ at the $\mathbb Q(t)$-point $(0,1/A)$. An M1 form is a cube-norm form $(A,B,A^2)$ of discriminant $B^2-4A^3$.

This note is a construction on Craig's cubic surface $x^3+y^3=2(z^3+w^3)$, not a claim that degree 12 is the cheapest $s=3$ identity. Levin–Shengkuan–Wiljanen give three M1 forms of a degree-9 polynomial $4F(t)$, independent under Gauss composition over $\mathbb Q[t]$ [14]. Craig's own Mordell chart of the same five cube-norms on this surface has homogeneous degree 24 [4]. The residual conic of a plane through the rational line $L=[a:-a:b:-b]$ is a different rational curve, of degree 2, and produces an irreducible discriminant of degree 12.

The contribution is: (i) three gcd$=1$ residual-conic charts on which five M1 forms have a common irreducible $\Delta(s)$ of degree 12, each of order 3 by Dirichlet composition in $\mathbb Q[s]$, with two explicit syzygies; (ii) three fundamental fibres at which Gauss composition of the specialised forms proves $r_3\ge 3$. We do not prove that every coprime negative fibre is independent.

## Related work and distinction

Craig's 1973 five-disc family is a degree-4 (Mordell) chart of this surface, with independence from cubic-residuacity rather than from an identity of three cubes [4]. Yamamoto's relation still holds on a residual conic, so the five forms span at most rank 3 [6]. Craig 1977 constructs $r_3\ge 4$ by a degree-141 polynomial [5]. Kishi–Komatsu give $r_3\ge 3$ for $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{4-3^{18n+3}})$, exponential in $n$ [7]. Two-E1 families of Hoque–Kotyada cost $2\ell$ and give $s=2$ [8]. Erickson–Kaplan is $(3,2,5)$ [9]. Shanks $D_6$ and Buell's quartic are $(3,2,4)$ [2,3]. Diaz y Diaz's criterion ($\ge 5$ inequivalent cube-norms $\Rightarrow r_3\ge 3$) is a search test, not a polynomial family, and five displayed pairs do not by themselves verify inequivalence [10].

Levin–Shengkuan–Wiljanen Theorem 9 exhibits
$$
F(t)=t^9+2973t^6-369249t^3+11764900
$$
and three rational functions $a_i(t)$, $y_i(t)$ with $y_i^2-F=a_i^3$ [14]. Then $A_i=a_i$, $B_i=2y_i$ satisfy $B_i^2-4A_i^3=4F$ over $\mathbb Q[t]$. Dirichlet composition in $\mathbb Q[t]$ shows each $f_i^{\circ 3}$ reduces to a form with leading coefficient $1$, and all $26$ nontrivial $\mathbb F_3$-combinations are non-principal. That is a degree-9 identity of three order-$3$ forms, cheaper than degree 12 as a polynomial identity. The disc is $4F$, a non-maximal order of conductor $2$. At every integer fibre the specialised first pair is imprimitive: $A_1=t(t^3-71)$ is even for all $t\in\mathbb Z$ (since $t^3-71\equiv t-1\pmod 2$), so after primitivising the disc drops from $4F$ to $F$ and $f^{\circ 3}$ need not be principal. Specialisations of the field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{F(t)})$ are not identically of $3$-rank $3$ (PARI histogram $0{:}3,1{:}10,2{:}10,3{:}3$ on $t=-40,\ldots,-15$; at $t=-23$, $F$ is fundamental and the primitive $P_1$ is not order $3$). LSW Corollary 10 is a Hilbert-irreducibility count $\gg X^{1/9}/\log X$, not a statement that the three specialised forms inject into $\mathrm{Cl}(K)$. The residual-conic charts below produce primitive forms of fundamental discriminants, which are classes in $\mathrm{Cl}(K)$.

rStation papers [11–13] are a Mestre–Nagao filter, a $5$-rank slot census, and a one-field $5$-rank $4$ certificate; they do not duplicate this parametrization. Paper [15] shows that a rational cyclic $9$-isogeny with an imaginary same-$Y$ pair need not force $r_3=3$. Paper [16] is a Tamagawa theorem for square-free Elkies $16D$; it produces no new field and no cheaper polynomial identity. None of these cancels the residual-conic chart.

## Methods

Let $X=x^3,\ldots,W=w^3$. The five pairs
$$
(zx,\,X+Z-W),\quad
(xw,\,X-Z+W),\quad
(yz,\,Y+Z-W),\quad
(yw,\,Y-Z+W),\quad
(zw,\,-X+Z+W)
$$
satisfy $B^2-4A^3=D$ on the surface $x^3+y^3=2(z^3+w^3)$. The plane $7(x+y)=8(z+w)$ cuts out $L$ plus the conic $4\mu^2-7\nu^2=29k^2$. Stereographic parametrization from $(k:\mu:\nu)=(1:-3:1)$ is
$$
\begin{aligned}
k&=4s^2-7t^2,\\
\mu&=12s^2+14st+21t^2,\\
\nu&=4s^2+24st+7t^2,\\
x&=8k+\mu,\quad y=8k-\mu,\quad z=7k+\nu,\quad w=7k-\nu.
\end{aligned}
$$
Restricting to $t=1$ gives five M1 forms $f_i=(A_i(s),B_i(s),A_i(s)^2)$ of a common irreducible $\Delta(s)$ of degree $12$, content $1$, negative leading coefficient, with $\gcd(A_i,B_i)=1$ in $\mathbb Z[s]$. (Polynomial gcd $1$ does not imply integer coprimality at every specialisation.)

Dirichlet composition is performed in $\mathbb Q[s]$, with exact polynomial division. Each $f_i^{\circ 3}$ reduces to a form with leading coefficient $1$. Exact order $3$ follows: $\deg A_i=4<\tfrac12\deg\Delta$, so $f_i$ is not principal, and $f_i^{\circ 3}$ is. Two syzygies hold identically on each gcd$=1$ chart:
$$
f_{zx}\circ f_{xw}\circ f_{zw}\quad\text{is principal (Yamamoto)},\qquad f_{yz}\circ f_{yw}=f_{zw}.
$$
The same two hold on $13(x+y)=14(z+w)$ and $19(x+y)=24(z+w)$. They bound the span by $3$; they do not prove a lower bound at every fibre.

Over $\mathbb Q(s)$ the form $(A,B,A^2)$ represents $1$ at $(0,1/A)$. That is not the identity used here.

Independence of the three displayed fibres is Gauss composition of reduced integer forms of a fundamental discriminant, not a GRH class-group computation. Rank in a non-maximal order is not claimed.

## Results

At $(s,t)=(-4,1)$ one has $D=-5585611223260903$, a prime $\equiv 1\pmod{4}$, conductor $1$. The five reduced forms are
$$
\begin{aligned}
f_{zx}&=(229262,99197,6090870994),\\
f_{xw}&=(259912,63861,5372602363),\\
f_{yz}&=(111826,-87977,12487299383),\\
f_{yw}&=(126776,-68101,11014734376),\\
f_{zw}&=(158576,-1957,8805889963).
\end{aligned}
$$
The Yamamoto triple is principal. The triple $\{yz,yw,zw\}$ is $\mathbb F_3$-dependent via $yz\circ yw=zw$. The other eight triples are independent. Certificate:
$$
3\mid 3\mid 5585611223260903\mid 229262,99197,6090870994\mid 259912,63861,5372602363\mid 111826,-87977,12487299383.
$$
This is an unconditional lower bound $r_3\ge 3$, not a computation of $h(D)$ or of exact rank.

A second gcd$=1$ chart, $13(x+y)=14(z+w)$, certifies the fundamental fibre at $(61,23,41,37)$:
$$
3\mid 3\mid 2427958003\mid 2501,151,242701\mid 2257,1069,269063\mid 943,259,643697.
$$
A third, $19(x+y)=24(z+w)$ through $(73,71,60,54)$, certifies
$$
3\mid 3\mid 135807000191\mid 4380,793,7751577\mid 3942,-647,8612850\mid 4260,-1033,7969957.
$$
A sibling conic through $(8,10,9,3)$ has $\gcd(A,B)=2$ identically on four pairs and is not used for certificates. The rational line $L$ itself gives $D=a^6+4b^6>0$ (real quadratic).

## Limitations

The three certificates are the independence theorem of this note. No specialisation theorem for all coprime $s$ is claimed. Craig's Proposition 3 (primes dividing the leading coefficients, noncube conditions, trace-residuacity) is not verified for these charts [4]. $|D|$ is Haar-large. Rank $4$ on this surface remains Craig's degree 141 unless a later identity appears [5]. LSW remains the cheaper degree-9 form-identity; the residual conic's advantage is fundamental-disc fibres rather than degree. The $n=5$ analogue of a residual of $L$ on $x^5+y^5=2(z^5+w^5)$ is a smooth genus-$3$ quartic, so it does not drop Hoque–Kotyada's degree $10$ for $s=2$ [8].

## Reproducibility

Integer certificates and the $\mathbb Q[s]$ identities are checked by Gauss composition only. The supplement checker proves that each displayed discriminant is fundamental (square-free and $\equiv 1\pmod 4$) and that the specialised forms are primitive. The supplement ZIP contains `check_conic12.py` and `test_lsw_forms.py`. From the unpacked supplement:
```
python3 check_conic12.py
python3 test_lsw_forms.py
```
Dependencies: Python 3 with SymPy. The same residual-conic checks live in `code/test_craig1973_conic2.py`, `code/test_craig1973_conic3.py` and `code/test_craig1973_conic4.py`.
